Social media has changed the way that brands operate, and smart organizations are taking advantage of the increased amount of time that consumers are spending online. Social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have created spaces for instant, two-way conversations between organizations and their audiences. Not all social media platforms are right for every organization, hence selecting a strategy with a specific goal in mind and a targeted strategy is critical.
Many industries, from retail and communications to construction and engineering have established a social media presence due to its popularity and versatility. It has the ability for informational posts, pictures, videos, and integration with other online platforms. This allows for the greatest level of flexibility. While not all posts may not be directly related to your brand, organization or current activities, engaging followers with other, seemingly unrelated posts, such as industry information or questions about an upcoming event in the industry or as simple as weekend plans, will keep followers engaged and new followers likely to engage because they see an active social media presence.
Furthermore, what makes a social media strategy so successful is it allows for dissemination of information in real-time and allows fans of the page to interact with each other about that information.
Lastly, social media should not be considered a chore or a drain already over committed resources. Social media should be an extension and addition to your existing communications plan and strategy.
